For our eighth episode of HYPEND Film Diaries, we highlighted film photographs taken and curated by Alicia Wu.

Alicia Wu was born and raised in Beijing until she was seven years old before moving to Vancouver. Now she studies public relations at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

When asked about her relationship to film photography, she laughed that her Nikon Zoom Touch 500 film camera is basically her right hand when she is out and about with friends - at parties, hanging out, or traveling. She further explained that, “I love the idea of delayed gratification that comes with taking film photos, waiting to finish a roll, developing it, and being happily surprised by the results. I like photos that happen naturally, showing the feeling of the moment that it was taken. I guess this is why I like shooting on film: it is not intimidating.”

The series of pictures she chose to include in her Film Diaries for HYPEND all incorporate feelings of happy nostalgia, which she believes to be intrinsic to film photography. As explained by Alicia, “Some of the moments captured and showcased here include children outside the Forbidden City, buildings in Hong Kong, Joshua Tree with friends, a dog outside Old Spitalfields Market who absolutely refused to pose for me, and a hilltop party in Los Angeles.”
